Syracuse University’s TRAC, an excellent clearinghouse for all kinds of government-related statistics, has used ICE and CBP data to give us some big-picture numbers related to immigration. Notably, out of nearly 38,500 detainees in ICE custody as of the end of January, fully two-thirds have no criminal record. Of the remaining third, many of the crimes involved are minor offenses such as traffic violations. Out of nearly 700,000 immigration court cases recorded in fiscal year 2024 (which started in October of 2023), 0.25% of cases even alleged criminal activity.

The next time you hear someone promote the “criminals at the border” narrative, keep in mind that ICE’s own statistics completely fail to back it up.
