Yes, it’s easy to see top communities by number of users, but for less known communities, it would be better if recommended.

The very first community I’ll recommend is !general@lemmy.world, which is the place to ask questions like this. This community is about the lemmy.world server.
I would encourage you to also seek out some communities on smaller servers to help grow the federation.
