What does your battlestation look like? PS4/5, XBox, PC or some oddball Chinese retro handheld?

    Steam Deck.

I’ve never owned a decent gaming machine, for various reasons. Cost was a big factor. Another was the fact that I was never a big “gamer”. Very little desire to play the big, popular, AAA games in general. The games I did play, I played on a very old PC, and the performance was what you’d expect from low end hardware; but I just never had any desire to build my own gaming rig.

The Steam Deck is perfect for my use case:

    • I have no desire to run Windows
    • I have no desire to build my own gaming machine
    • I have no desire to get locked into a console ecosystem (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, etc).
    • I can play handled, docked to a monitor with keyboard and mouse, docked to a monitor with a controller, docked to a TV, etc etc
    • I can play games built for Windows
    • I can play games with native Linux builds
    • I can play Steam games, Epic games, DRM-free games, emulated games, etc, etc
    • I can do whatever the hell else I want to do with it. For example, maybe I might want to run Kodi on it, and connect to my Jellyfin server at home to watch a movie if I’m staying at a hotel. Whatever. It’s just a computer like any other. I can do whatever I want.

I think I’ve probably played more new (to me) games since buying my SD than in all the years (decades) previous, and I love it.

Mostly PC, I have a PS5/PS4, switch, and xbox series as well. The xbox is basically collecting dust as most games that come out there are also on PC. The PS5 gets some use when there’s an exclusive and the switch is somewhere… I just don’t know where… Maybe in the couch?

I didn’t buy a series this gen because everything is on pc. Well, will be once Xbox starts actually releasing decent games. Only things I’m looking forward to are starfield and hellblade.

Probably play the ps5 the most, then pc and switch rarely. It’s mainly for Mario, zelda and metroid.

    In order of usage:

    Series X

    PS5

    Switch

    PC

Though PC is mainly on my crummy laptop and not my aging gaming PC these days. Can’t really just disappear into the office to play games anymore.

PC mainly, but a couple months ago I got a Steamdeck, and I can now play from the couch on the TV.

I’ve wanted to be able to play from the couch for a long time, but I did not want a PC on the TV, so this is a very good option.

I can play casually and also play coop sometimes easily.

Most importantly, I don’t have to be in my “office” room, since I work from home, it is good to be away from the room I am all day working on.

PS5 mainly. I do have a gaming pc but at the moment I’m just casual gaming on the sofa when I have time. I love the PS5, I think it’s the best Sony console since the PS2.

Oh wow that’s a bold statement. Personally i think the PS3 is better than the PS2 though. The move to online and HD graphics (for the average consumer) was huge. I know it had been a thing for a while, but that’s when it became mainstream

How come you’re such a big fan of the PS5? Is the game selection as good as the PS2?

Thought that would be a controversial opinion lol.

So purely from a console perspective, taking pc out of the equation completely. The PS3 game selection was severely lacking. It was a good console and the graphical jump was awesome, but the number of games I actually had was hardly any.

PS4 was fantastic in most ways, but a lot of the games I found really pushed the hardware which resulted in the console sounding like it was going to take off, becoming overheated etc.

The pros of the PS5 for me include the SSD, which makes such a huge difference to the speed of the console. Things like switching games is a breeze. The adaptive triggers are really good when implemented into games. The graphics are fantastic. I know many people don’t see a difference, but with a 4K tv games like the newest Ratchett and Clank look phenomenal. So much more can be done with physics and effects that the game actually blew me away with what it pulled off.

People say there aren’t many games but I’ve played and loved so many PS5 games including the two Spiderman games, Demons souls remake, Ratchett and Clank, FF7 remake, Hogwarts, and quite a few more.

The console is fast, simple to use, the games I’ve played have looked gorgeous in every way, and I’m seriously excited to see what else gets released now that companies are stopping PS4 and 5 versions and just purely developing for current gen.

Mainly PC or Switch. I was PS4 all last gen but switched to PC due to Sony’s scummy practices. I also had a Deck briefly but the subpar hardware wasn’t very enjoyable.

I have a full gaming rig, but mainly play on my Steamdeck - it’s so much more convenient to just be able to pick it up and play.

Mainly mobile gaming with a Samsung Tab S6, with pc games via Nvidia Geforce.

I don’t really play enough PC games to justify a gaming rig/laptop.

I own everything, but I’ll be honest my preferred way to play right now is on my Steamdeck. Being able to play PS4 quality games on the sofa whilst the kids/partner has the TV is a game changer for me.

Steamdeck took over most of my gaming. It’s by far the best gaming device ever made imo.

I’m playing on my Steam Deck like I was playing on my Switch 6 years ago. I prefer my indie games on handheld devices, so a good half of my playtime is spent on the Deck.

I general stick with a GBC or GBA with an Everdrive, as well as a DSi with custom firmware. It gives me the benefit of original hardware without paying the absurd retro game prices.

Do you have a backlight mod for your Gameboys? I’m tempted to mod my GBA but I know I won’t use it lol

No backlight mods. I actually like the stock screen. Not having a backlight is what gave the GB and GBC it’s legendary battery life. In addition, many GB and GBC (not not necessarily all GBA) games were designed with a non-backlit screen in mind.

That said my GBA is a SP AGS100 (front light)

I understand the appeal of a stock console, but damn I could not play on a non backlight device anymore, was such a pita when I was younger lol.
