This isn’t really true in rural communities. However, this imo is a bigger economy issue than it is an education issue. Truth is that kids as young as 11 and 12 are routinely hired for work in communities like these for the extra income they bring home to their families. Even farm kids on successful farms generally test or drop out of high-school even today. It’s just not worth it to spend all day in class when you can be making real money running the farm. And industrialized farms still need as many hands as they can get. What we need to do is take the profit out of basic food stuffs and subsidize it entirely as the basic necessity it is. Same with water and housing. There is no reason to squeeze every drop profit you can out of a venture except greed.

Tech companies don’t hire people who know their stuff. Tech companies pay contractors who know their stuff to do the things their trained employees can’t. They arent looking for a full cup. They need new meat to exploit while it’s still too dumb to realize how hard it’s getting shafted and then to dump it before it makes itself irreplaceable.

It also doesn’t sound as much like you’re looking for engagement as you are employment (“people with money don’t pay attention to me”). If money is the end goal, you want to do advertising, not just engagement. If engagement and community are what you truly want, then I’m afraid to tell you those things generally cost money instead of generating it.

Contracting work would be the best case of having your cake and eating it too. Contractors form their own communities wherever they go depending on the trades in question. I think you’ll find the network of likeminded individuals you’re looking for there. However, be advised that contracting is regulation heavy and would greatly benefit from a few focused law courses before really trying to get yourself into bidding jobs.

I think people know, but there’s this weird disconnect where it applies to bugs but not animals. Most kids know female mantis and spiders generally eat the males of their species, but far fewer know the realities of chickens or pigs. Always pretty easy to pick out the farm kids in biology class.

Both sides obviously have their merrit. I can see how mistborn would appeal to a wider fantasy audience, but I came at the cosmere looking to explore magical systems. Elantris and Warbreaker scratch that itch very well, though they can definitely be overwhelming for someone new to fantasy in general. It’s hard enough to sell anyone on long format books these days without having soft prerequisites on top of it all.

As someone who started with elantris and then proceeded to warbreaker, id have to disagree. Elantris captured my interest with its relatively simple, defined magic system. Its a blast discovering it right along with the characters, who drive the story. Then warbeaker comes along and shows me how esoteric and subjective the magic system can be, which sets me up perfectly to wonder at the powers we get drip fed in the stormlight archive. While SH is great to get into right after finishing Era 1 of mistborn, I feel like it pulls back the curtain a little too much a little too quickly to properly allow for the reader to grasp most of the context of what happens.

Codex Alera started as a drunken bet between Jim and another party that he couldn’t write a series on just two wildly disparate concepts. They were “pokemon” and “the lost Roman legion” lmao idk about your feelings but book series founded on foolish drunken bets probably don’t deserve much respect. This is a wondrous exception to that rule.

Super small suggestion, but check out elantris and warbreaker also by brandy sandy before you drip into stormlight archive or secret history. They’re not required by any means to enjoy any of the stories here, but they definitely clue you in to a few more Easter eggs than you’d notice otherwise. Iirc, both of those books are available through his website or by emailing his team at no charge. Could be old info but both the books are entirely worth their price anyways imo
