Same, humans make virtual worlds so much more compelling to me over entirely scripted singleplayer experiences. Even when I dont directly interact with other humans around me, it still makes a virtual world feel so much more alive.

I love singleplayer games too tho and I would hate it if all games were multiplayer affairs, I just think it is worth pointing out that pleasure of sharing virtual spaces with other people is something deeper than just a desire to directly connect and interact. Sometimes it feels more like the pleasure of visiting a new place and enjoying being alone and anonymous while people watching at a cafe in a busy city square.

Interestingly I am from the US where Ubisoft itself is legally considered a “non-decent human”… which makes this a classic case of “the pot calling the kettle black” except it is more like “the pot handle calling the kettle black” since Ubisoft is the person and the finance director is just an organ of that person (which organ I leave up to the readers imagination).

meh, of course there are good people with good intentions, I am not doubting nor even talking about people’s propensity to help in a disaster, rather it is the suffocation of daily life in the US that thoroughly demonstrates the pathology of cruelty in the US.

We hate homeless people, we dont give a shit about vets, we spit on people poorer than us and rationalize not feeling empathy for them precisely because they are poor… there are plenty of nice people in the US but a lot of them are addicted to exclusionary and hateful ideologies that effectively nullify their kindness except when society signals to them “this is a crisis”, which is ironic because the US has been drowning in crises my entire life, the suffering is just deemed invisible and not worthy of turning our empathy circuits on for.

The point of capitalism as a system is to create scarcity and crisis and then profit off of it. Stability and abundance are existential threats to the ruling class.

An extinction is just a chance to make killer profit right up to the end and then exit the industry and invest somewhere else like antidepressant manufacturing companies that have to meet increased demand from people being sad the ocean is dead.

I think it is worse that, if you want to make serious money off of running a social network, and dont want to actually have real moderation (which paying for essentially erases any serious profit margin) instead of ai crap, this is always how it is going to turn out. Bluesky might claim to be different but is just a slight reframing of the “problem” that leverages the high cost of moderation to set the stage for rationalizing centralization down the road.

I mean yeah elon musk is a shithead toxic jerk, but it isnt like any other corporate social networks actually do any genuine moderation at scale that is legitimately effective at protecting people who are considered a target by rightwing trolls.

You can either create profit for shareholders off of running a social network or have it be a healthy place for people, pick one.
