Push the front part in with your thumb as you pull the narrower part up with your fingers.
Correct! If you look real close at the photo, it even says “lift” on the left-hand side.
Exactly, lift what’s left in the picture and pull towards you. It will push a hole through the carton with the right part which you can push down to support the plastic a bit.

Well, they can be closed in the sense of „no fly gets in“, but oxygen does. Not to mention that juice would definitely flood out if you lied this on the side.
I wouldn’t trust any other kind to do that either tbh.
That’s why screw on lids were invented. Never understood this stuff
those are also a rather loose fit on the cartons I regularly use.
